“I’d have rather scored 25 goals and won a trophy. But I don’t think I had a bad time at Rangers. Not a chance.”

Verdict

There’s no doubt that Windass was inconsistent and fond of a strop. He didn’t always act in a way befitting of a Gers player.

Yet, at times, he definitely found himself scapegoated for wider deficiencies at the club.

Even after Sunday’s disappointing Old Firm result, it’s clear to see that Rangers’ squad is a lot better now than it was during Windass’ time. Had the likes of Steven Davis and Joe Aribo been around when he was playing, he would have had more opportunities to be effective.

The Gers sold the 25-year-old for just under £2 million in August 2018 [Transfermarkt], bringing in Eros Grezda as a slightly cheaper replacement [Transfermarkt]. Windass is hardly a modern great of the club, but he certainly made more of an impact than the hugely disappointing Albanian winger.
