Former Rangers and Celtic player on trial at League One club - report

League One Sunderland are interested in controversial ex-Rangers and Celtic midfielder Liam Burt, according to the Glasgow Times.

The report claims the 21-year-old midfielder has been invited to the Stadium of Light on trial after previously training with Championship side Barnsley.

Burt will now try and win a deal elsewhere after being released from his contract at Celtic Park only one year into a two-year deal.

Liam Burt joined Celtic last season after being released by Rangers in a controversial move which drew criticism from supporters on the blue side of Glasgow.

Burt’s move drew particular criticism due to comments the midfielder made about joining Celtic after spending years at Rangers and the Ibrox club offering him a first-team opportunity.

The boyhood Celtic fan claimed he was “back home” in comments which were largely viewed as unprofessional by Rangers fans.

This ultimately ruined what little legacy he had at Ibrox and the fact his career came to an end so soon at Celtic makes you wonder if burning his bridges was even worth it.

The midfielder made three appearances in total for Rangers after making his first-team debut against Raith Rovers in the Scottish Championship in March 2016.

Burt would go on to have two unconvincing loan spells in the Scottish Championship with Dumbarton and Alloa Athletic before being released at Ibrox.

The midfielder will now look to resurrect his career as he tries to win a contract with the Black Cats.
