Former Man United star Phil Neville has raved about the Ibrox atmosphere ahead of a potential meeting between his old club and Rangers in the Europa League round of 32, as quoted by the Daily Record.

Neville, who won six Premier League titles and the Champions League during a trophy-laden United career, has fond memories of playing in Govan.

He scored the only goal in a Champions League group stages encounter between the two clubs back in 2003.

“It was one of the most exhilarating, special nights that I had for Manchester United was playing at Ibrox,” said the current England Womens Head Coach, as quoted by the Daily Record. “I’ll never forget the moment, scoring after I think six minutes. It went silent.”

“The rivalry, the tension, the atmosphere was as good as I’ve ever played in. It would be an amazing occasion [if the two clubs are drawn against eachother].”

Verdict

It’s great to hear an ex-player who experienced so much success across his career, speak about Ibrox and the atmosphere created by Gers fans with such admiration.

Games against clubs of the stature of Man United are what the supporters want, with many already singling out this potential ‘Battle of Britain’ as the ideal draw.

Given that the Red Devils have struggled for consistency under Neville’s old teammate, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, this season, there would certainly be a belief amongst Bears that the players could not just compete, but pull off a result.

It was a massive achievement for Gerrard and co. to emerge from the group stages, and now sights are set on going as deep into the competition as possible.
