Former Celtic player and popular pundit Simon Ferry has joked that “Rangers fans have got me to thank for Scott Arfield” as he told a story about the player’s time in England.

Speaking on the GO Radio Football Show, Ferry was discussing the form of Arfield with ex-Rangers captain Barry Ferguson, who claimed Scotty Arf was a “8 out of 10” every week.

Someone Ferry knows particularly well through their time playing football together as youngsters, the ex-Celtic reserve player claimed he helped the now Rangers midfielder make a big call on his future.

“Me and Scotty have been tight since we were younger, we came through Scotland together,” said Ferry [GO Radio Football Show 14/12/20].

“I left Swindon, he’d left Huddersfield. He phoned me up, we were both struggling for a club.

“He was going to go to Southend on trial and my mate had been at Southend the year before so I said to him ‘Scotty, don’t go Southend, you don’t get paid, the club’s in a mess’.

“So he ended up not going and a day later, the next day, he gets a phone call to go on trial at Burnley, and the rest is history.

“The Rangers fans have got me to thank for Scott Arfield because he could’ve been at Southend playing in League Two, so there you go.”

Rangers star Arfield has been revelation for the club this season and has fought back from the fringes at Ibrox to become one of the club’s most important players.

The ex-Burnley and Falkirk midfielder, 32, offers something different from the other midfield players at the club and has been on sensational form this campaign, scoring seven and laying on five in 26 appearances for the side.

In his third season with Rangers, Arfield deserves every credit for breaking back into the squad after finding himself out of the team in the early part of the campaign.
