Jordan Jones is set for a stint on the sidelines after Sunderland boss Lee Johnson provided the briefest of injury updates on the Rangers loanee [Sunderland Echo].

Jones has been in excellent form since heading out of Ibrox in January, scoring two fine goals and notching three assists in EFL League One as the Black Cats push for promotion.

However, in a setback, he missed their Football League Trophy triumph over Tranmere at Wembley at the weekend after failing a late fitness test.

Given that he’d only just missed out on the final, plenty of supporters hoped he would be back for a trip to Accrington Stanley in the league on Wednesday night.

However, Jones was nowhere to be seen when Sunderland’s team was announced, leaving some fans concerned.

An update of sorts was provided by Johnson after the game, but he didn’t go into specifics regarding the nature of the injury, nor did he provide an expected return date.

“First to return would probably be [Aiden] O’Brien,” he said [Sunderland Echo]. “Second Jordan, and Bailey [Wright]– they’ll be pretty close.”

It’s not much to go on but it seems unlikely that the Gers loanee will be back in time for Sunderland’s fixture against Lincoln City at the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon.

He’ll be hoping not to spend too much more time on the sidelines, though, given that he only has a limited amount of games in which to impress Steven Gerrard.

Last month, Jones asserted that the door was still open for him at Ibrox and that talks with the manager were scheduled for the summer [Daily Record], but a recent transfer report claimed he’s been told he is free to leave, with four English Championship clubs interested in his signature [TEAMtalk].

Rangers are back in action against Slavia Prague on Thursday night and their opponents will be without a key player for the match.
