Fernando Ricksen: Celtic deserve credit for tributes to Rangers legend

There few things which can unite the opposing, polarising sides of Glasgow when it comes to Rangers and Celtic.

But there is something powerfully unifying about the passing of a club legend from either side of the divide.

This is perhaps the most significant and moving example of the unique understanding which Rangers and Celtic fans have for each other.

Supporters of other clubs generally don’t understand – even if both sides generally resent one another.

So after Fernando Ricksen passed away, the large outpouring of respect and sorrow being expressed by the Celtic legions is to their club’s credit.

Yes – much as would be the case if the roles reversed – there will be a faint echo of those who’re best left ignored.

But similarly to the passing of Celtic’s European Cup-winning captain Billy McNeill and the response of the Rangers faithful, the overwhelming majority of tributes have been respectful and positive.

Former Celtic combatants Stiliyan Petrov and John Hartson lead the charge, whilst the Parkhead club themselves released a classy statement.

But what’s been perhaps most refreshing is the response from the average Celtic supporter.

Ricksen – a player who more than most embodied that No Surrender edge of a Rangers warrior – is someone who in his prime was arguably the most universally disliked amongst the Celtic faithful.

And yet club rivalry has been put aside to pay tribute to a man who fought such a debilitating illness with class, dignity and unbelievable courage.

It’s a fitting tribute.

That unity between blue and green this afternoon is something which Fernando himself would’ve been very proud of.

“I’d like to thank the world’s best supporters,” said Fernando [via Vincent de Vries].

“Yep, that’s Rangers AND Celtic – for supporting me. It’s fantastic to know that you are united while I am fighting MND. You are both great, but together you are even greater. I feel very proud.”
