Whatever you say about the carelessness of last night’s performance, fans need to remember one thing. This is still very much in our hands. The Villarreal match could make or break our campaign.

The Spaniards travel to Ibrox in three weeks time and the fans have a huge role to play. We need to have that stadium rocking from the first minute to the last.

And the players need to respond.

Too often in recent years Rangers have come up short when it matters most. We’ve let it slide when the pressure has been on.

In our final home game in the group stages this season, that simply cannot happen. It’s a huge ask to take maximum points against Villarreal, but make no mistake, we can do it. We might have to.

Big European nights at Ibrox have defined our season

Massive nights under the lights in Govan have been the biggest signposts of improvement this year. Against the likes of Osijek, Maribor and Ufa, the fans were at times the difference makers.

They can be a secret weapon and can be again against Villarreal.

Maribor are a Champions League side. Osijek knocked PSV out of the Europa League last season. It was a huge three points against Vienna earlier in the campaign. Rangers can step up on big nights with the fans on their side.

It will go down to the wire in Group G, but we need to give ourselves the best possible chance by upstaging Villarreal.

The responsibility rests firmly at the feet of the players. But another massive performance from the fans could make that pivotal difference.
