‘Exceptional’… Barry Ferguson thinks 29-year-old’s Rangers form is down to simplifying his game

Barry Ferguson believes one Rangers player has benefitted hugely under Philippe Clement, who has helped simplify his game.

In the months that have followed since Philippe Clement first stepped foot in Govan, the Rangers manager has improved almost everybody in his squad at a rapid rate of success.

Michael Beale’s pool of summer signings were flailing miserably in particular but Clement has managed to eke the very best out of their performances.

And it has got Rangers into a position where they are arguably favourites for the Scottish Premiership title after being seven points behind Celtic in October.

Ferguson believes Todd Cantwell – who has five goals in his last eight league games, as per Transfermarkt – has been very impressive over the last couple of months and believes he can be the key to Rangers’ title push.

But it’s midfielder John Lundstram who has caught Ferguson’s eye the most since Clement’s Ibrox arrival and thinks he’s been the most consistent player for Rangers this season.

Moreover, our former captain is hugely impressed by his leadership qualities in the middle of the park and not being frightened to bellow at his teammates when needed.

Barry Ferguson was speaking on The Go Radio Football Show and when asked who his favourite Rangers star has been so far this season, he replied: “Well since the new manager has taken over, the most consistent performer – and he may not have been man of the match every single game – John Lundstram stood out for me like a sore thumb.

“He’s just played that pivot in front of the two centre-backs and he’s just simplified his game which I think has brought his game up a level or two.

“So he’s one player I’m sure the manager will be desperate to get on a new contract because we all know he runs out of contract in the summer. Rangers will be desperate to get him tied down on a new deal.

“He’s probably playing the best football since he signed for Rangers. He looks to me as well that he is a real leader on the pitch and the players are obviously looking up to him.

“He’s very vocal and that’s something that is missing in the modern day, communicating all the time. When I’m watching Rangers, he is one of they guys who is making sure if someone is out of position, he’s barking in their ear.

“I’ve got to be honest with you, his form over the last three or four months has been exceptional.”
