In the age of social media, previously unnoticed incidents from matches can be broken down into minute detail.

This can give rise to rampant paranoia which already existed within football fans.

Poundshop referees are all over timelines with their theories on why a decision was wrong or the law wasn’t enforced properly.

And there was one such controversy with arose from Rangers‘ win over St Mirren as certain supporters screamed conspiracy.

Connor Barron did not deserve Rangers red vs St Mirren

Following the win over the Buddies at Ibrox on Sunday, screenshots were shared of a Connor Barron challenge on Toyosi Olusanya.

The pair both went for a high ball and the midfielder went with his foot and the Saints striker went crashing to the ground afterwards.

The assumption from some was that meant a foul had been committed and even that a red card should have been flashed, but former referee Bobby Madden has moved to clear things up.

He insists there was no evidence of contact between Barron and the player’s face.

He wrote on social media: “In my opinion this is not a red card offence as there is no evidence of contact between the boot and head/face.

“Some people may think there is contact, but there is no clear image to support that. The third camera angle I think likely proves there is no contact with the boot and the face, but you still can’t be certain. So no intervention the correct approach.”

Why Barron’s tackle is different to Hearts vs Celtic challenge

Fans across the other side of the city as usual had their take on things and compared it to a tackle last season when their player Yang was sent off against Hearts.

But Madden says the lack of contact is why they are different and that he only thought that warranted a yellow at the time anyway.

He added: “For the record, it’s being compared to a challenge at Tynecastle last season, they are absolutely not identical though. For one the ball is played in the current clip and there is evidence of contact in the situation last season. I would also add that I believed that should have been a yellow card at the time. The level of contact/force didn’t endanger the safety of an opponent.”
