Former Rangers youth Tom Lang is set to return to professional football after signing a pre-contract deal with Championship club Raith Rovers [Raithrovers.net].

Lang began his youth career at Birmingham City before joining the Gers as an 18-year-old in 2015.

The 6ft 2″ centre-back was unable to break into the first team, though, and after being released by Rangers he joined Dumbarton on a short-term deal.

He’s since represented both Stranraer and Dunfermline Athletic and has had multiple stints at Clyde, for whom he’s started every SPFL League One fixture this season.

Clyde are a semi-professional side and their playing squad, as well as some staff members, were put on furlough after the SFA decided to halt all leagues below the Championship last month, leaving Rangers loan players in limbo.

There’s still uncertainty around when the third and fourth tiers of the SPFL will resume but Lang’s future is now secure after he penned a pre-contract agreement with Raith.

The 23-year-old will return to full-time football in the summer on a two-year deal.

“Tom’s a player we have had our eye on for the last couple of years, ever since we both returned to the club,” Raith management team John McGlynn and Paul Smith told Raithrovers.net. “We’ve followed his career and feel he is now at a perfect age, having gained great experience working under Danny Lennon at Clyde, and ready to establish himself in our team.”

“Tom is a 6’ 2″ central defender who, having come through the academies at Birmingham and Rangers, can pass the ball out of defence but having gained experience in the lower leagues in Scotland he can defend as well.”

Raith are currently second in the Championship table above third-placed Dunfermline on goal difference but a full twelve points behind leaders Hearts, although they have a game in hand.

An exciting young Rangers prospect is currently on loan at Stark’s Park and received glowing praise from McGlynn after scoring a stunning goal against Dundee last month.
