Former Rangers winger Daniel Candeias has sent a defiant message on Twitter after a downturn in form for his new club, Genclerbirligi.

The 31-year-old was a big favourite across his two-year stint at Ibrox, as a player who always guaranteed 100% work-rate and who was also capable of the sublime.

However, amid fears over a lack of game time, he headed for pastures new in the summer, joining Turkish Super Lig club, Genclerbirligi.

His new club endured a wretched start to their league campaign and sat bottom of the pile early on. Helped by an inspired Candeias display away at Antalyaspor in October, they began to turn things around and move up the table.

However, that upturn in form proved to only be temporary, and recent results are dragging them back towards a relegation scrap.

Gencler have won just one of their last six matches, and have lost their last two. After a 2-0 home defeat to Trabzonspor at the weekend, they are 13th in the table, and just four points clear of the relegation zone.

It seems the result prompted Candeias into sending out a defiant message on social media.

The Portuguese posted an action shot accompanied by the caption ‘Never give up’, while he also tagged his club’s account in the post.

It seems the winger has swapped the hunt for trophies at Ibrox for a basement battle, but he’s certainly getting the playing time he so craved.

He’s been involved in all but one of Gencler’s 21 league matches so far this season, racking up 1708 minutes of action. Across that time, he’s scored three goals and registered six assists.
