Ex-Rangers striker thinks misfiring duo could be shown Ibrox exit door

Ex-Rangers striker Billy Dodds believes Steven Gerrard will be mulling over the idea of selling Alfredo Morelos and James Tavernier in the summer.

The two players were far-and-away the club’s two biggest performers last season, but both have been on the receiving end of stick this campaign.

And such has been the domestic collapse in Govan, Dodds believes that the Rangers boss will be considering moving two of the club’s biggest assets on in the next window.

“I like the way that Steven Gerrard goes about things, he calls it the way he sees it,” said Dodds [Scottish Sun].

“He will be analysing his squad right now and there are a lot of players who haven’t made a contribution. These guys you can’t blame them for where the team are.

“Some of the mainstays will be getting analysed. It is the ones who have played constantly in the last two years, like Tavernier.

“He’s cost them big goals in big games again and that’s the captain.

“Managers are over loyal at times and I think it is coming to the point he won’t be loyal anymore.

“It has got to the point the mainstays have to get moved on and if Rangers are to catch Celtic they have to do that.

“I’d throw Morelos in with Tavernier as well. Rangers fans might think Steven was cutting his nose off to spite his face by not playing him but he was right.

“He isn’t scared to make the really big decisions.”

Club captain Tavernier has come under constant criticism from fans during this wretched spell of domestic form and hasn’t been as effective in the final third this season.

In the last campaign, Tavernier hit 17 goals and laid on 20 assists in 57 matches. To date, Tav has three goals and 14 assists in 43 games [Transfermarkt].

Much of profligacy in front of goal has come from his nerves going from the spot earlier in the season.

Morelos too – despite scoring 29 goals for Rangers this season to date – has
come under fire for showing up late and being forced to sit out Saturday’s Scottish Cup defeat to Hearts.
