Former Rangers striker Cedric Itten starts for Young Boys against Manchester City in the Champions League but was upstaged by Erling Haaland.
The former Ibrox striker, 26, has relaunched his career since a 2022 return to his home country and continues to grab headlines Switzerland.
But Cedric Itten was powerless to resist as Manchester City and Erling Haaland blew the Swiss away in a 3-0 win at the Etihad.
Cedric Itten lasted 65 minutes in the match before being hooked for Miguel Chaiwa but by that point the Premier League and Champions League holders had secured the victory.
A double from Erling Haaland – which took the £51m striker’s Champions League record to a whopping 39 goals in just 34 games – came either side of a Phil Foden strike.
The result guarantees Manchester City progress to the next round of the competition with RB Leipzig also qualifying from Group G with a game to spare.
Cedric Itten goes from Rangers bench to starting v Manchester City
It’s been quite a journey for Cedric Itten since leaving Rangers, with the clash against Manchester City yet another sign of the progress the Swiss striker has made in his career.
Rangers signed Cedric Itten from Swiss side FC St Gallen in 2020 and, despite impressing in flashes at Ibrox, the striker struggled to settle in Scotland.
A loan spell at Greuther Furth followed in Germany before a brief recall to Rangers under Giovanni van Bronckhorst failed to go to plan and – given the dearth of striker options at the time – cost Rangers big time in the hunt for Premiership and Europa League glory.
As things stand, Cedric Itten and Young Boys are tied with Serbian side Red Star Belgrade in the hunt for that 3rd place Europa League spot.
If the Swiss earn the spot – Young Boys hosting Red Star on matchday five – it could well set up a Cedric Itten reunion with Rangers in the new year.
Depending on how Rangers’ Group C journey goes the Ibrox side may well face a Champions League drop-out in the playoff round of the competition after Christmas.
But for the time being Rangers fans will note the progress of Cedric Itten whose gone from the Ibrox bench to starting against Manchester City in the space of 18 months.
Cedric Itten has seven goals for Young Boys this season, including one v Red Star the 2-2 Champions League draw in Serbia.
