Former Rangers star Gennaro Gattuso is reportedly looking to a hijack Gers links to a £2m international defender linked to Ibrox earlier in the year.

Kenyan international and Elfsborg centre-back Joseph Okumu was linked to Rangers in March amid claims Aston Villa and Leicester are monitoring Filip Helander.

Swedish outlet Sportbladet claimed that the Premier League interest in Big Fil could see the Gers move for Okumu who is believed to be valued at little over £2m.

Now – according to Fotbollskanalen – Rangers face competition from Serie A side Napoli for the player’s signature, with the Partenopei currently being managed by Rino.

La Liga outfit Valencia and Ligue 1 side Nice are another two clubs reportedly interested in 23-year-old Okumu ahead of the summer window.

The big defender was also speaking to Fotballskanalen about his future and revealed he’s ready to take the “next step” in his career.

“The Swedish league is a springboard for all players. If you do it well, hopefully the right opportunity arises,” said Okumu.

“If the right option emerges, I definitely want to take the next step.

“It depends on the project. It’s not just about going to a top league or a top team. It’s all about where I can go and develop, where my playing style fits and where I can make an impression.

“I’m not just moving to move. It is important to see the bigger picture.

“It’s the dream all players have.”

Okumu isn’t the only defender being linked to Rangers ahead of the summer transfer window as the club are also linked to a leading Euro U21 star.

But the Gers also face stiff competition for that player’s signature with a mix of Premier League and Champions League clubs also said to be interested.
