A leading Italian newspaper is claiming that former Rangers midfielder and World Cup winner Gennaro “Rino” Gattuso will be sacked at Napoli come the end of the season.

Il Mattino, via Football Italia, are reportedly claiming that the Azzuri will part company with ex-AC Milan star Gattuso at the end of the season after a disappointing campaign.

Napoli were eliminated from the Round of 32 in the Europa League by Granada whilst they were also cast from the Coppa Italia semi-finals by Atalanta.

It’s had plenty talking about the future of Gattuso, with his Napoli side now sixth in a competitive Serie A, three points off Atalanta in a Champions League place in 4th with a game in hand.

The Italian midfielder, famous for his feisty and aggressive midfield play, has reportedly seen his relationship with Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis deteriorate as a result.

According to the report, the likes of Celtic-linked Rafa Benitez and Maurizio Sarri have been mentioned alongside the job.

Gattuso was appointed the manager of Napoli in December 2019 and won the Coppa Italia with the club last season, beating a dominant Juventus side 4-2 on penalties in the final after a goalless draw.

The Italian has also had a spell in charge of former club AC Milan whilst he has spent time managing Sion, Palermo, OFI Crete and Pisa.

Gattuso, 43, was signed for Rangers as a teenager from Perugia in 1997 and played 40 games in his first season at Ibrox.

However, Dick Advocaat would sell the feisty midfielder on to Salernitana before the talented Italian moved to AC Milan a year later, a club with which he would play for around 13 years.

Gattuso twice won the Champions League with AC Milan in 2003 and 2007 and Rino was part of the Italian side which won the 2006 World Cup.

Whilst Gattuso might well be out the door at Napoli this summer, the fact Benitez is linked to the role highlights the hilarity of links across the city to Celtic.
