Former Rangers player Jordan Jones scored a ‘stunning’ goal and bagged an assist as St Mirren hammered Kelty Hearts 4-0 to book a spot in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup.

After spending the second half of last season on loan at Sunderland, Rangers sold Jones to Wigan Athletic in August for an undisclosed fee.

The Northern Ireland international signed a three-year deal there but after a promising start, he dropped down the pecking order and was snapped up on loan by St Mirren last month.

He’s started the Buddies’ last three Premiership fixtures and he opened his account for the club on Saturday afternoon.

The Paisley outfit were already leading 1-0 when, in the 50th minute, the winger cut inside from the left flank and whipped a right-footed shot into the top corner from the edge of the area.

St Mirren’s official account described the goal as ‘stunning’.

The 27-year-old wasn’t done there, either.

Just eight minutes later, after a driving run, he picked out Greg Kiltie and he swivelled before finding the bottom corner.

Jones was subbed off in the 72nd minute with the win already secured and Kiltie bagged his second with five minutes of normal time remaining to complete the scoring.

It was a tough day out for former Rangers player and Academy coach Kevin Thomson, who’s Kelty manager, but the fourth-tier side did well to make it to the fifth round.

Meanwhile, a Rangers fringe player has joined a Scottish Championship club on loan until the end of the season.
