Alnwick was released by the Gers in the summer and quickly snapped up by St Mirren, for whom he’s excelled so far this season.

The Buddies are having a superb season and defeated Celtic at Parkhead for the first time in over 30 years at the weekend to move to sixth in the Premiership table, despite having played fewer matches than any other top-flight side.

It was yet another damaging defeat for Celtic, and Alnwick’s post-match comments, in which he contrasted his weekend experience to being between the sticks when a weak Rangers side lost 5-0 at the same venue in 2018, show that he very much enjoyed coming out on top.

“It was a much busier day back then,” he said [Glasgow Times]. “We got beat by five and it could have been 10. It was relentless that day. But it wasn’t like that on Saturday. When you go to play the Old Firm clubs you expect to be busy, but that wasn’t the case. I am happier when I’ve got nothing to do!

“It was a total contrast to coming here with Rangers that day. It was a huge disappointment back then. Personally, I might have had a decent game, but it’s never nice losing five to your big rivals and it was a sore one.

“So there was a bit of me that thought it was nice to walk off with a win this time with St Mirren. It’s two different teams, but I was delighted with the result.”

It will be somewhat galling for Neil Lennon and co. to hear Alnwick talk about having ‘nothing to do’ during what was a must-win home game for the Hoops.

Yet, it’s certainly not the only time an opposition keeper has had a quiet outing at Parkhead this season, with Livingston’s Max Stryjek only called into action once during a 0-0 draw there in mid-January and Allan McGregor totally untroubled during October’s 2-0 Old Firm win.

Rangers’ loan agents have helped deal blows to Celtic on a number of occasions across the season and it was a former player’s turn to get involved on Saturday.

Although, as he’s admitted here, it was far from a difficult day at the office.

Meanwhile, an English manager has given an intriguing transfer update on a player the Gers have already signed on a pre-contract.
