Former Rangers player Matt Polster has clinched the MLS Supporters Shield with New England Revolution after a remarkable season.

Polster joined the Gers in January 2019 and spent 18 months at Ibrox as a backup right-back, making ten appearances in all competitions.

The popular USA international was sold to the Revs in the summer of 2020 for a fee in the region of £300k [Scottish Sun] and it has turned out to be an excellent move for him.

Not only is he playing regularly again and being deployed in his preferred defensive midfield position, but he’s also a member of a successful team.

For the first time in their history, the Revs have just won the MLS Supporters Shield.

Polster and co. have led the way in the Eastern Conference for the majority of the season and after Western Conference leaders Seattle Sounders lost to Sporting Kansas City on Saturday, the Revs were crowned regular-season champions with three matches to spare.

It’s an incredible achievement for manager and sporting director Bruce Arena, who took charge in May 2019 with the club bottom of the Eastern Conference.

In addition to securing the Supporters Shield, the Revs have qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League and will benefit from home advantage in the MLS playoffs.

Polster played a big role in the title win, featuring in 28 matches to date, starting 25 of them.

He chipped in with key goals in narrow wins over rivals Philadelphia Union in August and September and provided steel in midfield for the league’s top scorers.

Polster may not have set the world alight during his time at Ibrox, but he’s likely a better player for the experience and is certainly thriving now that he’s back in the States.

Meanwhile, some Rangers fans are calling for a stand at Ibrox to be named after the late Walter Smith.
