Ex-Rangers man Stuart McCall axed by Sheffield United

Former Rangers boss Stuart McCall finds himself out of work having been axed by Premier League side Sheffield United earlier today.

The fates of former Gers managers are a real mixed bag.

Michael Beale hasn’t returned to the game yet whilst Steven Gerrard is now in Saudi Arabia with Al Ettifaq – nowhere near his Liverpool dream.

Pedro Caixinha has ended up in Brazil with Red Bull Bragantino and Mark Warburton is out of the game having left the West Ham United coaching staff.

Then we go back to Stuart McCall’s time in charge in 2015 as the former Gers midfielder stepped in to replace Kenny McDowall in the Ibrox dugout.

McCall guided Rangers into the playoffs but fell short of promotion against his former club Motherwell.

Rangers were in a real mess at the time and McCall made an emotional return to Ibrox having racked up more than 250 appearances for the club as a player.

Rangers decided to replace McCall at the end of the season with Warburton coming in, but Gers fans were appreciative of his efforts.

The former Scotland international returned to English football with Bradford City and Scunthorpe United before heading back to Bradford once again.

McCall became Blackpool assistant manager in 2021 but left after just a few months, teaming up with Paul Heckingbottom at Sheffield United.

Heckingbottom and McCall guided Sheffield United back to the Premier League last season but have now been axed by the Blades.

Sheffield United have today confirmed that both Heckingbottom and McCall have been relieved of their duties following a dismal start to the season.

11 defeats in 14 mean Sheffield United have now made a change with Chris Wilder coming back to the club.

McCall surely won’t be out of the game for long having proven himself as an experienced coach and manager over the years.

We can’t see a Rangers return as part of Clement’s coaching staff with Alex Rae seemingly the choice of a ‘Gers man’ to work alongside the Belgian.

McCall may well return to Ibrox with another club down the line, and we would expect a decent reception from the Rangers fanbase if that happens.
