Cameron Cooper has a new club five months after leaving Scottish Premiership giants Rangers after being snapped up by Oxford United on Tuesday.

Back in June, Rangers confirmed that the Scotland U18 international would be one of a number of players – alongside Jack Roberts, Zak McKay and Christian Mulindwa – let go by the Glasgow giants at the end of last season.

Cameron Cooper is now looking to continue his development on the other side of Hadrian’s Wall. The teenage striker joined Oxford United today, earning himself a contract after impressing on trial and scoring as the U’s under-19 side hammered Brentford 5-1 over the weekend.

“I’m buzzing,” Cooper tells the Oxford website. “Since I found out I could get the opportunity to come down here, I’ve been really looking forward to it. And I just can’t wait to get started.

“All the boys have been great with me, as well as all the coaches and all the staff. I’ve now got the opportunity to play for Oxford United and, when I came down and spoke to (academy manager) Stevie Kinniburgh, it was a bit of a no brainer for me.

“The way the club wants to move forward, the way they give young boys a chance… It’s all you can ask for. And now it’s up for me to take it.

“I’m just buzzing to get going and show what I can do.”

Cooper spent one year at Rangers between 2022 and 2023. He joined the Ibrox outfit from Glasgow neighbours Partick Thistle, but now finds himself at an ambitious, in-form Oxford side sitting second in England’s League One.

Following in Kemar Roofe’s footsteps

Cooper should look to take inspiration from Rob Dickie (QPR), Shandon Baptiste (Brentford) and Luke McNally (Burnley) – as well as Rangers’ own Kemar Roofe – at an Oxford side who boast an impressive track record when setting talented youngsters on their way.

Roofe scored 32 goals at Oxford, making his name at the Kassam long before leading the line at Ibrox.

“Cameron is a player who I have known about for a while,” explains Kinniburgh. “And when I heard there was an opportunity to talk to him, I was delighted.

“Seeing him in our environment over the past few months and seeing how quickly he has adapted to a new team has been exciting. And I am looking forward to seeing him pull on the yellow jersey in the future.”
