Former Rangers youth Cammy Palmer has proven he was right to move to Northern Irish club Linfield as he helped secure a 44th Irish Cup success with the Belfast side.

Rangers have long held an association with Linfield and this season the Northern Irish champs stand on the verge of matching the Gers’ 55th title success.

Five points clear at the top of the Northern Irish Football League Premiership with two games to spare, a draw against Coleraine on Tuesday evening will secure the prize.

But before then the Northern Irish outfit – led by ex-Gers striker David Healy – had the pleasure of lifting the nation’s premier cup competition.

Palmer played the full match as Linfield ran out 2-1 winners of league rivals Larne courtesy of goals from Shayne Lavery and Joel Cooper.

Jeff Hughes pulled one back in injury time for Larne.

The result sets up what should go on to be a superb cup double for the Blues and Palmer has enjoyed a fantastic few months since joining in January.

The ex-Ibrox kid, 21, has endured a series of loan spells at Partick Thistle, Orange County and Clyde and is now tasked with finding a home in Belfast.

He’s certainly well on his way to doing so and alongside fellow ex-Gers Academy kid Matthew Clarke, can celebrate silverware after lifting the Northern Irish FA Cup.

Rangers have a long-held association with Linfield and the Northern Irish club helped the Gers with a fund-raising friendly as financial difficulties loomed in 2012.

Ahead of next season, Steven Gerrard revealed the Gers are “discussing” the possibility of a pre-season friendly with the Belfast club.
