It has been a tough couple of years for Russell Martin.
The 33-year-old centre-back spent eight seasons at Norwich City, several of which as club captain.
Therefore, it looked like an astute signing, when the Gers brought him in on loan in January 2018.
He mustered 15 league appearances, scoring once in a 2-0 home win over Hearts.
However, it wasn’t sufficient to earn a permanent deal.
Featuring in a back four that shipped five goals away at Hibs on the final day of the season, probably didn’t help his cause.
Since then, things have went downhill.
Martin’s contract expired at Norwich and after a stint as a free agent, he joined Walsall in League One, taking up a player-coach role.

After just 12 appearances and with the club languishing near the bottom of the division, his deal was terminated.
Citing family reasons, Martin left and joined MK Dons.
In doing so, he completed a remarkable slide from Premier League to fourth tier in just three years.
He made his Dons debut at the weekend.
Yet, that didn’t go according to plan either.
The centre-half played 90 minutes in a 1-0 away defeat to lowly Grimsby Town.
That’s despite the hosts playing the entire second half with just 10 men.
Not the best of starts for the veteran, but surely, he’s due a change of luck soon.
