Scottish football has never been sort of characters and one of the biggest has returned with the news that Duncan Ferguson is taking over at Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

The former Rangers striker is taking over from another Ibrox hitman after Billy Dodds’ recent exit from the Championship outfit.

An unsuccessful stint at Forest Green Rovers hasn’t deterred Duncan Ferguson with his appointment at Inverness Caledonian Thistle sure to bring a bit of excitement back into the Cinch.

A thirty year absence from Scottish football seems to have been a long enough break from the SFA after their abhorrent decision to apply a 12-game ban to the towering forward on his release from a three month stint in Barlinnie prison for his infamous “headbutt” on John McStay.

Moving to the Premier League saw him become a fans’ favourite at both Everton and Newcastle United but injuries prevented him from truly fulfilling his potential.

His coaching career is one to be respected with a host of big name managers trusting him as an assistant manager – Champions League winners Rafa Benitez and Carlo Ancelotti among them.

That Ancelotti wanted to take Duncan Ferguson to Real Madrid says it all about the respect he carries, a far cry from Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

It might not be as glamourous as Madrid, but after years as a number two, FBig Dunc is keen to make a name for himself in his own right and he had to start somewhere.

A previous outside bet for the Rangers vacancy, Ferguson has been around long enough to know what his philosophy is going to be and how he wants to play.

One of the accusations thrown at Michael Beale recently is that he doesn’t have the stature needed to be a Rangers manager, something that Duncan Ferguson isn’t short of.

Who knows, if he hits the ground running and plays attractive football, he might find himself back at Ibrox one day.

If Inverness get promoted that is…
