Former Rangers striker Jermain Defoe, who only departed the club in midweek, has attracted reported interest from former club Sunderland as the League 1 side are chasing promotion.

Defoe is no stranger to the North East, having played for Sunderland between 2015 and 2017, scoring 37 goals in 93 appearances.

Following on from his recent release from the Ibrox side, current Sunderland boss Lee Johnson has spoken about the situation regarding the striker.

“We are fully aware of Jermain’s situation as everybody is,” said Johnson [SunderlandEcho].

“We are fully aware of Jermain’s character traits and professional standards over the course of his career.

“As with any transfer scenario there are a million things that would have to happen for that to be beneficial for all parties.

“Obviously the rapport with the area will always come into account and that respect for an individual, not only as a great human being but who has also had a fantastic career, will always come into it.”

These comments suggest a move for Defoe cant be ruled out as Johnson looks to strengthen his side and bolster the teams promotion hopes.

Jermain Defoe still has plenty to offer

The 39-year-old will still be hungry to play for at least one other club before retiring, the striker is still in excellent condition despite his lack of playing opportunities towards the end of his Ibrox career.

There is doubting his predatory instincts, and these could be invaluable for Sunderland if they manage to sign the player.

No one at Rangers had anything bad to say about Jermain Defoe during his three-year stint at the club, with the Ibrox faithful wishing him well for his next career move.

Defoe’s contribution at Rangers may go well beyond just the goals he scored, with a fruitful relationship having developed between him and Alfredo Morelos which can net the club millions in the future.
