Rangers midfielder John Lundstram has begun to show his Premier League class at Ibrox – and play himself into contention for a new contract at the club.

The former Sheffield United star is in his third season in a mixed spell at Ibrox where at times he’s been the best on Earth and others, well, potentially the worst.

There’s a wonderful symmetry to the fact that John Lundstram’s resurgence culminated in a Man of the Match showing in the Europa League.

It’s in this competition where the biggest moments in the midfielder’s Rangers career have come and against Real Betis John Lundstram was back to his swashbuckling best.

At his best John Lundstram is a dynamic, aggressive, technical midfield player who plays with purpose and direction, driving his teammates up the park whilst also offering a goal threat from late runs to the edge of the box.

At his worst, Lundstram is timid and toothless, often shirking big challenges and letting his head drop, misplacing passes and watching the game pass him by.

John Lundstram playing himself into Rangers contract contention

As he enters the final year of his contract, it is recognised that John Lundstram is a influential member of the first-team squad but there have been doubts about a new deal.

Given Lundstram’s previous stint in the English top flight it means he’s on substantial wages for a Scottish side and that is unlikely to change.

Now 29-years-old, any new contract would also surely take John Lundstram into the latter stages of his career and this may well impact on performances.

Rangers will be waiting to see how things progress between now and Christmas but as things stand the midfielder is certainly in contention for signing on for longer in Glasgow.

Joining Rangers in the summer of 2021, the former England youth international has made 110 appearances for the Ibrox side, scoring nine goals.
