Ex-Liverpool player building solid partnership with Rangers stalwart

Ex-Liverpool defender Ben Davies is beginning to build a solid partnership with Rangers stalwart Connor Goldson – and it could be the difference between success and failure.

For all the gripes surrounding Rangers this season the club boast the best defensive record in the league and – since the turn of the international break – have held four clean sheets on the bounce.

This is in no small part down to the re-introduction of Ben Davies, who after joining from Liverpool last season has seen his time at Rangers badly interrupted with injury.

Having been the subject of English Championship interest in the summer, it’s being said that Ben Davies wanted to stay and prove his worth at Rangers, with a formidable partnership forming alongside Connor Goldson.

The two players have never been defeated together in the Scottish Premiership and that very decent run of four games without conceding is a welcome boost to a confidence-sapped side.

Ben Davies and Connor Goldson building solid Rangers defence

It’s said that the best teams are built on a strong defence and between the naturally left-sided Ben Davies and the right-footed Connor Goldson there’s a solid and effective balance in the team.

There’s a reason why ex-Preston star Davies wound up at Anfield and even if many Rangers fans had ran out of patience with the defender perhaps the tide is turning.

Against Real Betis it was the defender whose attitude helped force the ball over the line in a 1-0 victory which – although won by Abdallah Sima – saw Ben Davies named Man of the Match.

Connor Goldson has so often been the defensive leader and – Filip Helander aside – has rarely had someone dependable alongside him at the heart of the defence.

Having Ben Davies alongside Connor Goldson helps alleviate the pressure on the Rangers vice-captain and the situation appears to be bearing fruit.

Should the club continue to prevent those cheap goals being conceded, it is almost certainly a solid springboard from which success this season can be built.
