With the situation surrounding Rangers boss Steven Gerrard and Newcastle United intensifying, ex-Celtic star Kris Commons has taken the opportunity to twist the knife.

The former Parkhead midfielder has made a bit of a career out of controversial commentary and has even found himself in hot water with Celtic fans before.

But this time around Commons took to the Daily Mail to muse over the situation involving now Saudi billionaire-led Newcastle and the Rangers boss.

According to the Times, Gerrard is one of three managers on a shortlist to take over at St James’ Park with Unai Emery and Roberto Martinez the other two mentioned.

But for Commons, it isn’t the links which have him thinking Gerrard could move to Tyneside but rather the Rangers gaffer’s response to questions on the subject.

Gerrard refused to get involved in speculation linking him to Newcastle, instead talking up current manager Steve Bruce as he approached his 1000th game in management.

It’s a milestone Stevie G may hope to reach himself some day and Commons reckons by refusing to rule out a move it suggests Gerrard is interested.

“All Gerrard has to say was that he had absolutely no interest in the Newcastle job,” said Commons.

“That he didn’t speaks volumes for me. He had the chance to end the speculation and didn’t take it.

“He knows how his comments will be viewed. Whether Newcastle are interested in him is one thing. But there’s no doubt in my mind that he’s interested in Newcastle.”

Rangers fans will be hoping the cash-rich Toon don’t turn to Gerrard so they never have to find out if the Ibrox gaffer wants the job or not.

Gerrard is a legend at Ibrox for his transformation of Rangers and fans aren’t quite ready to see the back of him yet.

But whilst Celtic fans might hope Gerrard moves to Tyneside, the Parkhead club’s fans might have their hearts broken by the same manager for the second time in six months.
