Prominent ex-Celtic player pundit Davie Provan has been left seething after UEFA sent a warning to member clubs about cancelling the season early.

Provan criticised the SFA for taking UEFA’s lead on the awarding of titles in a stinging column which claims any Rangers and Hearts legal defences could’ve have been “ignored”.

“Ceferin is threatening to withdraw next season’s European places from associations who call their leagues on current positions,” writes Provan [Scottish Sun].

“You can bet that was Doncaster’s intention [to do what UEFA tell him]. Even more when Belgium set the precedent by declaring Club Bruges as Pro League champions.

“With the null and void route never an option, crowning Celtic would have brought him some grief, but nothing he couldn’t have handled.

“Legal threats from Rangers and Hearts could safely have been ignored.

“Instead, Doncaster has become a hostage of Uefa’s big five leagues who need to complete their fixtures.”

UEFA’s decision has left pundits like Provan – who are genuinely convinced the Parkhead side deserve this title despite not having earned it – absolutely seething.

Having a go at Rangers’ finances in the process, Provan’s angry column also aims for SPFL chief Neil Doncaster and the likes of UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.

For some reason, it’s hard to imagine the column ended up in Ceferin’s email inbox this morning.

“The Ibrox club couldn’t have picked a worse time to hold a share issue,” claims Provan.

“And if Celtic are implementing wage cuts, what’s the lockdown doing to Gers’ bank balance?

“Sure, their wage bill is way less than Celts, but Jermain Defoe isn’t here for the weather.

“When new chairman Douglas Park reveals Rangers’ next set of financial results he’ll need an anaesthetic.”

Provan played for Celtic between 1978 and 1987, winning seven major honours with the Parkhead club despite growing up a Rangers fan.
