End of Season Report: Jon Flanagan

Moving on from Borna Barisic, it’s time to turn to Jon Flanagan.
After signing on a free transfer from Liverpool last summer, the full-back had a poor start to his time at Ibrox.

Thrust into a relatively unfamiliar left-back berth due to injury to Barisic and a lack of natural cover, he consistently failed to impress.
After long-term injury problems, he looked short of confidence. He refused to overlap down the left flank and his distribution was all over the place.
A lacklustre first half showing against Aberdeen in December was the final straw for Gerrard.

Flanagan was hooked at the interval and he would have to wait three months for his next SPL start.
By April, with the end of the season looming, Flanagan looked on the brink of becoming a total Rangers flop. However, circumstances conspired to give him a second chance, and boy did he take it.

Ahead of a home clash against Hearts, Barisic was once again stricken and Andy Halliday, who had deputised ably, was suspended.
From that point onwards, Flanagan not only held his own but made the shirt his for the post-split fixtures. He was part of a back four which kept a clean sheet in five of the final seven league matches.

Not only that, but he looked much improved on the ball and even got forward on occasion to support attacks.
After bursting onto the scene at Anfield as a teenager, Flanagan was valued at a whopping £7.2m by Transfermarkt between 2014 and 2015.

He might not ever reach those standards of performance again, but he’s certainly given himself a chance of becoming a success at Ibrox.
Just eight of his 30 appearances this season came in 2019. However, Flanagan arguably made the most marked improvement of any in the Gers squad after the winter break.
