Drew McIntyre reveals private messages with Steven Gerrard as he gives next Rangers manager verdict

Drew McIntyre has had his heart broken plenty at Rangers over the years, just like the rest of us.

The dyed-in-the-wool bluenose is never shy in pinning his Rangers colours to the mast with the WWE legend one of the club’s most public ambassadors.

With that comes an added sense of expectation as Drew McIntyre puts himself out there to front up the Rangers team’s shortcomings.

Rangers have lost five home games in a row for the first time in the club’s history with Barry Ferguson in interim charge after the club’s fourth manager in as many years was sacked.

But when it comes to who is to get the job full-time, McIntyre is apprehensive to hand the reins to one legendary Rangers figure who broke his heart.

Drew McIntyre on messaging Steven Gerrard as Rangers manager

Steven Gerrard might’ve left Rangers in the lurch for Aston Villa but the Liverpool legend’s name continues to be mentioned alongside the Ibrox manager’s role.

Gerrard has distanced himself from management for the time being after leaving his role with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq.

But the former Rangers manager is amongst the front runners to take over Ibrox when US investment group 49ers Enterprises take charge in Glasgow.

Drew McIntyre claims that whilst Gerrard ‘broke his heart’ by leaving back in 2021, he would be prepared to forgive and forget if the Scouser turned things around in Glasgow.

McIntyre also revealed that he had messages back and forth with Stevie G during the gaffer’s time in Glasgow.

”Maybe Gerrard is the one to bring back,” McIntyre told the Overlap US. “You know, he hurt me. He pained me. He came in, he really turned us around.

”He’s somebody, the same deal, knows what it’s like to play with that passion, play at that level, turned the team around completely, stopped Celtic getting 10IAR.

”Sent him a couple of messages back and forth between us on the social media, was so happy to see him there.

”Gerrard broke my heart. It would be tough to forgive him but if he does come back and he gets us back in our winning ways then I will give him a mighty hug and i will forgive him.”

‘Rangers should be in no rush to let Barry Ferguson go’

Whilst Drew McIntyre isn’t completely turned off the idea of Steven Gerrard returning to Rangers, the wrestler is in no rush to see the back of Barry Ferguson.

After a disastrous domestic season under Philippe Clement, Ferguson has come in to lead a Rangers squad in disarray.

McIntyre reckons Rangers should take their time before making the next appointment, with legendary former Gers captain Ferguson having a firm understanding of what it means to play at Ibrox.

“I wouldn’t want to kick old Barry out this quick,” McIntyre explains.

”I never want anyone to lose their job, but the last gaffer, he shall not be named, I was like God, please get rid of him.

”I’m not going to say he is the one but I was just excited when I heard Barry Ferguson was coming in after such an abysmal (season).

”Somebody that knows what it’s like to play for the jersey, someone who knows what it’s like to truly be a Rangers player.

”Especially if you go against Celtic. That was a good week where we beat Fenerbahce and we beat Celtic in the same week.“
