Press Association journalist, Andy Newport, has claimed on Twitter that Greg Docherty still believes he has a future at Rangers, despite being primed to join Sunderland on a loan deal.

On Wednesday afternoon, STV reported that Sunderland and Charlton were competing for the 23-year-old’s services before the Scottish Sun asserted that the player had opted for the Black Cats.

Newport has added to those reports, though, claiming the midfielder doesn’t feel this is the end of the road for him at Ibrox.

On the contrary, he’s chosen the Stadium of Light, because he feels like it’s the best place for him to prove himself to Steven Gerrard.

Verdict

If this update is accurate, it shows remarkable commitment from Docherty to making a success of his Rangers career.

Having moved from Hamilton in January 2018, things simply haven’t gone to plan so far.

He played semi-regularly during his first few months at Ibrox, but he’s yet to make a single league appearance under Gerrard in a season and a half, spending the 2018/19 campaign on loan at Shrewsbury Town and the first half of this one grafting away in training without any reward.

As things stand, a breakthrough looks highly unlikely, even if he were to join Sunderland and succeed there.

After all, he won the Player of the Year award at a League One side last season, and it appeared to do him little good.

The fact is, that as long as the likes of Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara, Steven Davis and Scott Arfield remain at the club, he’s unlikely to find a route into the side.
