The sporting director of French side Amiens has claimed that Rangers beat off a “lot of interest” from clubs in Spain and France to sign Bongani Zungu.
John Williams currently oversees the transfers of the Ligue 2 club and would’ve been heavily involved in the loan-to-buy deal which sees the South African midfielder move to Ibrox.
Speaking candidly about the interest in the player, Williams claims Rangers were Zungu’s preferred destination speaking volumes about the player’s determination to come to Ibrox.
The Amiens sporting director also believes the role of Steven Gerrard was invaluable in getting the player to Rangers.
“There was a lot of interest in him this summer,” said Williams [Glasgow Times].
“There were clubs in Spain and elsewhere in France who were interested in him. He preferred to go to Rangers.
“I am sure that the manager made the difference. He is also an English-speaking player.
“But, of course, Rangers is a fantastic club. Wherever you go in the world you will find a fan of Rangers.
“I think that will have been a factor in the choice he has made in his career.”
Williams also opened up on the type of player Rangers are getting and hyped up Zungu to Ibrox fans who might not know a lot about the South African.
Labelling Zungu as a “fantastic player” Williams believes that the Rangers fans are bound to take to the player.
“He is a fantastic player,” said Williams.
“He is a central midfielder. He is not defensive. He is the one who supplies the ball to the attacking players in the team.
“His skill level is very high. He is a hard worker and technically good. He can do everything. You cannot expect more from a player in his position.
“I think the fans of Rangers will like him.”
Rangers midfielder Zungu himself has got Rangers fans excited when he announced his excitement about joining the club on Twitter and announced: “Glasgow is Blue”.
