Davie Provan has claimed that Rangers manager Steven Gerrard should “quit whilst he’s ahead”.
In what’s one of the most incredible pieces of the season so far, former Celtic star Provan has stated that the Rangers manager is on a hiding to nothing at Ibrox.
Whilst admitting the fact that Gerrard has cut an impressive figure, Provan dismissed any notion of Rangers improving to challenge Celtic.
Speaking in his exclusive column in the Scottish Sun, this is what he had to say.

“I trust Steven Gerrard has the savvy to recognise he’s already on a fool’s errand at Ibrox. The Rangers job is only going to damage his reputation. The trick for him now is to get out while he’s ahead.
“Like Derby’s punt on Frank Lampard, there will be owners willing to embrace the celebrity of Stevie G. Gerrard’s stellar playing career will ensure he’s never short of offers.
“Leaving aside the Europa League income, they expect Gerrard to deliver a symbolic piece of silverware but the signs are not good. By taking the Ibrox job, Gerrard demonstrated the bottle that distinguished him as a player. But there are signs the task is already proving beyond him.”
Misguided from Provan
Those are just a few snippets of this morning’s piece. Provan is a top Scottish pundit who’s been covering Scottish football for over 20 years now. You would think he would know better than to go down such a misguided route.
There seems to be this general feeling that Gerrard’s main goal this season is to win the league. That needs eradicated. What the Rangers manager needed to do this season was begin building a team that was more competitive to Celtic. Has he done that? So far, they’re only four points behind, so yes.
The idea that he should just jump out of his hot-seat and run is disrespectful to him and Rangers. As much as there have been some signs recently of where Rangers need to improve, there have been signs all season of where they have done.

Provan simply comes across as an over-enthusiastic Celtic supporter in his piece here. Rangers have won one of their last five and there’s no getting away from that. Aberdeen, Spartak Moscow, and Kilmarnock were poor results for the club. But how silly can you be in thinking that, because of it, it’s time for Gerrard to go?
The Liverpool legend has made terrific improvements at Ibrox in his first transfer window in charge. Are they perfect? No. Are Rangers going to win the league? Probably not. Have they improved? 100%.
After years of decline, the supporters finally have something to get invested in. Gerrard has given Rangers renewed hope of better days to come. Provan and everyone else needs to understand that this isn’t some short-term quick-fix, it’s a long-term vision being built at Ibrox.
Rangers will just be hoping the end results are more positive than what they’ve shown over the last two weeks.
