Rangers captain James Tavernier has discussed his future beyond the end of the season, with his contract expiring this summer.

The right-back’s future has been a topic for discussion for the past few years, but he is now nearly two months away from potentially leaving the club.

Tavernier has been a regular for Rangers, but Danny Rohl has turned to Dujon Sterling on numerous occasions this season.

David Edgar believes it is best if James Tavernier leaves Rangers

David Edgar, host of the Heart & Hand podcast, reacted to Tavernier’s recent interview, which was shared by the BBC.

Edgar believes that the 34-year-old should leave the Ibrox outfit at the end of the season.

In his view, it is the best time for Tavernier to part ways with the club he joined back in 2015.

The fans will be hoping that his exit could coincide with the 56th league title, as he can leave on a high note.

Even if that does not happen, the Englishman will go down as a Rangers legend, being the highest-scoring right-back of all time.

He has made 562 appearances for the Light Blues in all competitions, scoring 144 goals and providing 148 assists.

Via X, Edgar wrote: “This summer seems to be the right time for Tav to move on. Hopefully in triumph!”

This was in response to comments made by the right-back about a potential new contract at the club.

He replied when asked if talks had taken place over a new deal: “Not currently but that would be out of my hands if there was (a talk with the club). I’m fully focused on the team and my performances and there’s a team behind me who deals with that kind of stuff.”

What are Tavernier’s wages at Rangers?

Tavernier has been among the highest earners at Rangers for the past few years, and that could be one of the factors that could lead to his exit.

The hierarchy may want to give the highest wages to players who can contribute the most and who will also be regular starters.

There is a possibility that even if Tavernier stays, he will be a backup as the Gers want new right-backs in the summer.

The right-back is currently on £30,000/week, which reportedly makes him the fourth-highest earner at the club.

All three who earn more than him are players who have joined on loan – Mikey Moore, Nasser Djiga and Max Aarons.
