Dave King’s AGM speech was followed by him admitting to supporters that he would be “surprised” should the club do no business in January.

The Rangers chairman gave a lengthy speech at the club’s AGM yesterday. The event was one of the quieter ones of recent years, showing the progress made at the club this season.

King has certainly had tougher times in his AGM chair in the past, and it was almost a celebration of how far the club have come since this same time last year when Pedro Caixinha was just booted out the door.

And, in an exclusive in-house interview with Rangers TV, King opened up on how he would be “surprised” if there was no strengthening in January.

““I’d be surprised if we don’t do some business in the January transfer window. However, it will only be done if we can improve the overall value of the squad and the right players is available in January.

““It’s not going to be done just for the sake of it.”

Following the Mark Allen train of thought

This pretty much follows the Mark Allen train of thought when it comes to January. The Rangers Director of Football claimed last week that the club won’t do much in the window. But he did state that, should an opportunity arrive to improve the squad, Rangers will take it.

It does, however, go against the idea of signing four new players in January. This is the total Steven Gerrard himself confirmed that he would like during the Winter. Whether he has the funds to go out and get the standard of player he likes remains to be seen.

King, however, doesn’t seem ready to let January pass by without some sort of action. He seems determined to make sure the Rangers squad improves in each window, and this mid-season one will be a huge period in Rangers’ campaign.

Gerrard brought an incredible 15 players to the club in the summer. It’s the largest rebuild the club have had for many years. King may feel Gerrard shouldn’t need another four given his signing quantity in the summer. Umar Sadiq is the only one to not add anything to the squad since his arrival.

Rangers fans can be pleased that the chairman is ready and waiting to help Gerrard pounce on opportunities to improve the squad. It’s evident he wants improvement in January also. Here’s hoping, for Gerrard’s sake, that he can get the targets he’s after.
