Curtis Main represents a cheap alternative for a third-striker

As Rangers continue to search for a third-choice striker, would Curtis Main represent a cheap alternative?

Don’t be alarmed by the Motherwell forward’s stats this season. Five goals in 17 appearances certainly doesn’t read well. Eight goals in 21 last season also doesn’t sound too impressive.

In truth, however, he could potentially represent some fantastic business, as he’s more than just about scoring goals.

Main is a good old-fashioned bulldozer. He gets crunched into opposition defences, and uses all of his physicality to push his side forward. To sum it up, he’s an absolute handful.

Of course, Rangers don’t need reminding of Main’s goal-threat either. He did net Motherwell’s goal in the 7-1 hammering of the Steelmen a few weeks ago at Ibrox. Main was impressive that day until Motherwell went down to 10 men, He uses all of his muscle to tremendous effect, and was giving Nikola Katic a hard time up top with Ryan Bowman.

Contract is nearly up

The Englishman’s contract is up at the end of the season. He’s already stated that he’s going to assess his future in January. Considering Rangers are looking for another striker in mid-season, he would provide a good fall-back.

Of course, the likes of Dominic Solanke are always going to be at the top of the target list. That goes without saying. But Rangers still have to prepare for if/when that deal doesn’t happen.

It seems highly probable that Umar Sadiq is going to be sent back to Roma at some stage. Whether that will be after Rangers secure another forward or not remains to be seen.

Main, however, would be a cheap prospect in January, with Rangers most likely able to get him for nothing more than a few hundred grand. Motherwell aren’t in a position to demand high sums for players leaving within six months. So long as he doesn’t sign a new contract, this deal could be easily done.

One thing Main gives you is his all. He has deceiving pace for someone of his size, and is probably the most powerful striker in the Premiership. It would be interesting to see what he could do at a side like Rangers if given the chance.

At the moment, it’s nothing more than a suggestion. But if Rangers need a cheap alternative for a third striker this Winter, it could be the Main man.
