Craig Moore a sporting director candidate after Rangers job poser

Being a former Rangers player isn’t a necessity for the next sporting director but it gives Craig Moore an advantage if he is being considered.

The former Gers skipper is an intelligent speaker on the game and has been involved as a scout, an agent and a director of football since retiring from playing.

To do the job for Rangers he would need to utilise all these skills and there are few candidates that tick as many boxes as Craig Moore.

Moore arrived in Scotland as a teenager, was looked after by Walter Smith and went from an average utility player to a commanding centre-half.

Oz’s partnership with Lorenzo Amoruso was the backbone of many successes for both Dick Advocaat and Alex McLeish.

No nonsense and fully committed, Moore knows exactly what it takes to be a Ranger and how to make the transition from the youth set up to the first team.

Moore did it surrounded by world class players too.

Could Craig Moore replace Ross Wilson at Rangers?

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, the popular defender was asked if Rangers had been in touch and, with a glint in his eye, said:

“You laugh a bit, but that was a job I did for three years but people go ‘it was only Australia’ but we look at what Ange has done. Jon Brady, an Australian coach, has just got promotion at Northampton.”

Moore went on to say that selling “a player or two” is a priority given the rebuild required and that task would be one of his most pressing if he was appointed.

As with David Weir, Moore is a hugely respected figure in his homeland and in football in general, having played in the Premier League for Newcastle United and in the Bundesliga

You would think that John Bennett and James Bisgrove will have a long list of suitably qualified people for the job and if Weir’s work puts him close to the top, Moore can’t be far behind.
