Could young Northern Irishman be perfect replacement for Rangers icon?

In another pivotal weekend in the title race between Rangers and Celtic, a Northern Irishman took centre stage for the Gers.

Up in Dingwall, veteran Rangers midfielder Steven Davis was rolling back the years to put in a magnificent midfield display at the heart of the Gers midfield in a 4-0 win over Ross County.

But back in Glasgow, another Ulster midfielder in Ali McCann was playing a pivotal role in earning St. Johnstone a point against Celtic in yet another impressive display from the 21-year-old.

Davo – even at 35 – is still dictating football matches and is now Northern Ireland’s most capped player with one eye on breaking the Peter Shilton’s British cap record.

Midfielder McCann made his international debut for Northern Ireland in a 2-1 defeat to Austria in November and for many will be the long-term replacement for Davis in the green of the country.

But is the young Ulsterman a realistic option to be the long-term replacement for Davis in the blue of Rangers?

Linked to Celtic in the past [Courier], McCann is amongst the most highly-rated youth prospects in the Scottish game and has impressed massively in a St. Johnstone side now unbeaten in 11.

Davis might be evergreen at the moment, but his career is certainly not going to last forever, however his influence on McCann has already been evident.

Speaking to Not the Old Firm, McCann has previously lauded the ex-Southampton star’s influence on his own career.

“People like Steven have had great careers, playing down in England and in the Premier League,” said McCann.

“He has 120-odd caps for Northern Ireland and just watching him day to day he is such a good professional.

“You don’t have a career like he has had without being a good pro and being at it every day.

“If I can take anything from a player like him it can only help me in my career. All the older lads show an interest and try to keep young players like me right.

“They helped me settle in and I felt part of it whenever I got there.”

Could the young Northern Irishman be the long-term replacement for legendary figure Steven Davis at Rangers or is McCann yet to prove he’s at the level of our resident midfield maestro?

With two ageing midfielders in the squad, we ask if recent transfer links to two midfielders in particular are with a view to replacing these leading figures.
