As Rangers toiled for a midfielder in the transfer market, many fans were urging the club to move for Aberdeen’s midfield talent Lewis Ferguson.
The son of former Ger Derek and nephew of ex-captain Barry, Lewis, 21, won last season’s Scottish Football Writer’s Association Young Player of the Year and is considered one of the country’s leading young talents.
The Scottish Sun linked Rangers with a move for the player earlier in the window with Ferguson himself suggesting that he wasn’t paying any attention to all the paper talk [Daily Record].
The Gers instead opted to move for Bongani Zungu on deadline day with there being little evidence to suggest that Rangers had Lewis in their sights this summer.
Now, Ferguson has started this season on immense form, taking his game to a new level and leading the Scottish Premiership scoring charts with eight goals, albeit five of those penalties.
His latest two came amid a stellar performance in the 3-3 draw with Celtic, the midfielder keeping his nerve in the last minute to steal a point for Aberdeen.
The Scotland U21 international’s strike against Hamilton wasn’t a bad one either.
Ferguson also got another two goals in Aberdeen’s Europa League qualifying campaign meaning he’s on 10 already for the season.
The midfielder is an all-action box-to-box type who is central to Aberdeen’s style of play and to their ambitions this season.
Alongside loan Ranger Ross McCrorie they’re developing one of the most exciting young partnerships in the Scottish game and this summer might’ve come too soon for the player and Rangers.
At Aberdeen Ferguson is almost talismanic, his leadership and performances the result of a trust which may not have been so forthcoming at Ibrox.
Despite being so young, Ferguson has already racked up 96 performances for Aberdeen, hitting 20 goals and laying on 18 assists in impressive numbers from the middle of the pitch [Transfermarkt].
It’s evidence that there’s little doubt that Pittodrie is probably the best place for his development right now.
But far from write off the idea Rangers should ever move for the midfielder – who is contracted to Aberdeen until 2024 – could we yet see another member of the Ferguson family Ibrox in the coming years?
