Could Rangers be alerted to availability of Ryan Gauld? - reports

Ryan Gauld is a name that Scottish football and Rangers fans will be pretty familiar with. If not overly so.

The youngster once dubbed the “Scottish Messi” hasn’t exactly set the lavender alight in Lisbon since joining Sporting.

The tricky, technical former Dundee United midfielder moved their in 2014 for a reported £3m. Now at Farense in the Portuguese second division, Gauld has struggled to breakthrough into the first team.

And this weeks Daily Record Rangers Podcast has suggested that he is available in January should Rangers want him.

Whilst there’s no suggestion that Rangers are interested, should they be?

This is a creative, dynamic midfielder who at 22, still has plenty of developing to do. What’s crazy is he played around 50 times for Dundee United between the ages of 16 and 18.

He is surely coming back a better player from Sporting Lisbon than he went in.

That said, I think it’s an exciting and glamourous prospect, but not a functional one.

Rangers do need creativity in midfield, but it remains to be seen if Ryan Gauld can come in and supply that straight away.

There are other options who might be more suited to that creative, leadership role. I doubt Gauld will be first name on the teamsheet.

But I wouldn’t be against a loan. You never know, maybe a return to his homeland could prove a massive move for both Gauld and Rangers.

He was once likened to the GOAT.
