Arsenal midfielder and Rangers supporter Charlie Gilmour has announced that he’ll be leaving the Emirates club in the summer.
The holding midfielder’s contract is set to expire, and Unai Emery has decided against offering him a new one. The player is now on the look-out for a new club.
In the message below he might say he supports Arsenal, but he also supports Rangers. And given the early success of one Arsenal Academy graduate at Rangers, we could certainly do worse than the player.
Rangers struck gold when they signed the classy Glen Kamara for a reported £50k in January. Rangers star Scott Arfield described it as “the steal of the century” [originally Ladbrokes].
Like Gilmour, the Finnish international is a former Arsenal Academy graduate who was released. The only difference between them is that Gilmour actually played for the first team – twice.
This season Gilmour, 20, turned out for Arsenal in the Europa League against Vorskla Poltava and Qarabag. You don’t get games for one of England’s biggest clubs if you haven’t got something about you.
Now, the Scotland youth will turn his attention to getting a new club elsewhere. Both Charlie Gilmour and his Grandad would love it to be at Ibrox.
The issue is Rangers have a wealth of options in his position. Glen Kamara has begun cementing his place. Ross McCrorie is one of the club’s top young prospects. The likes of Greg Docherty and Jordan Rossiter are set to return next season.
But given the success of the other Arsenal Academy graduate at the club, there’s certainly no harm in having a look.
