As the row over the league season rumbles on up north, there’s much change being proposed at Newcastle United down south in the Premier League.
Rangers fans normally wouldn’t care much for what happens at St. James’ Park, but the news that much-maligned Toon Army owner Mike Ashley could sell the side to a group of Saudi Arabian funded investors should pique their interest.
The implications on the ongoing retail battle with the Sports Direct owner will be closely considered by Gers fans as the story progresses.
But it’s in high-profile transfer links between Newcastle and Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos where things get interesting.
If the investors push through the reported £300m takeover Newcastle United fans should look forward to a healthy transfer kitty funded by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund.
The Toon are reportedly also one of eight clubs being touted for a move for Rangers’ Colombian goal machine [Goal].
Rangers’ much-publicised business conflicts with Mike Ashley made any move to Newcastle United look incredible unlikely.
But should Ashley end his 13-year reign at St. James’ Park then Newcastle United present an interesting proposition should they legitimise any reported interest.
Alfredo Morelos hit 29 goals for Rangers this season before the shutdown and has been routinely linked with a move away from Ibrox over the last 18 months.
Rangers may wish to keep their star striker but if the Saudi-funded Toon put forward a bold offer then it may well test the Ibrox club’s resolve.
