Connor Goldson's remarkable consistency that deserves recognition

Connor Goldson’s Rangers consistency deserves to be more recognised that it currently is.

After another commanding display against Hearts, the centre-back reaffirmed his status as Rangers’ number one defender. Despite the fact Steven Gerrard has signed four of them over the summer, Goldson has been the constant.

The centre-back received much praise alongside Nikola Katic early on this season, but hasn’t been in the spotlight recently. If it wasn’t for Goldson, Rangers would be in a much worse position than they’re currently in. His quality in the tackle as well as his confidence on the ball is second to none in the squad. He isn’t fazed when having the ball at his feet, and that’s a key trait to have in Gerrard’s side.

Added to that, Goldson has had to deal with some changes to his partnership in recent weeks. Despite initially playing alongside Katic at the start of the season, he’s now partnering Joe Worrall these days.

Worrall hasn’t overly impressed since coming into the fold in recent weeks. Generally, his performances have been positive, but there were more poor moments against Hearts that provided cause for concern. Meanwhile, Goldson continues to go about his business with as limited mistakes as possible.

Hardly any key errors

During his time at Ibrox, you’ll do well to think of three key errors he’s made in matches. The fact he’s already featured an incredible 19 times this season is incredible in itself. Gerrard just won’t drop him, and no wonder either.

It wouldn’t surprise you if he’s partnering Gareth McAuley next. The Northern Irishman has yet to make a Rangers appearance, and is continuing to build up his fitness.

Different defensive partnerships leads to different chemistry and level of understanding with each other. Goldson has managed to put in performance after performance despite the changes to the position alongside him.

There’s no denying that the most impressive partnership Gerrard had at the back was when Katic was there. The Croatian and Goldson worked superbly well together, with Worrall still struggling to make a big impression.

Regardless of who Gerrard chooses alongside him, he can be safe in the knowledge that his number one defender will always perform. Goldson continues to impress everyone in Govan, and he’ll continue to be such a valuable player as the season goes on.
