Connor Goldson urges fans to stand by Joe Worrall

Connor Goldson and Joe Worrall are in the middle of forming a very profitable partnership. The former, however, wants more people to appreciate the latter.

Goldson has been one of the most impressive signings of the Steven Gerrard regime. Since arriving at Ibrox, the towering defender has been commanding and shown he’s a cut above most Premiership forwards.

The same, however, can’t be said of Joe Worrall as of yet. He arrived from Nottingham Forest whilst Goldson and Nikola Katic were impressing at Ibrox. Despite that, however, he managed to get into the side in order to give Katic a rest, and hasn’t looked back.

Even though Gerrard is sticking by him, certain supporters haven’t been overly-impressed with what Worrall has brought to the table.

Goldson, however, has urged everyone to remember just how young the centre-back is.

“Joe’s a great player and still a young boy. People don’t appreciate he’s only 21 years old because he looks about 30! If you remember that and look at the teams we’re playing at European level, he’s done well in all of them.

“We’ve got a great squad. Look at the players behind us right now fighting for places. Niko was unbelievable in the first few months and Gaz has been playing Premier League for 10 years.”

Worrall deserves time

There’s no denying that Worrall deserves plenty more time to prove himself to the Gers support. He’s already started to rebuild his image once more after great displays against Hearts and Spartak Moscow.

Gerrard gave Katic a shot against Hamilton last weekend, but he failed to impress in a terrible performance. That gave Worrall his position back against Spartak, and he’s likely to play in today’s Betfred Cup semi-final against Aberdeen.

There’s clearly a top defender in there when it comes to Worrall. He’s starting to grow into his role at Ibrox, but at a club like Rangers it’s important you perform consistently. Worrall needs to show he’s capable of doing just that in the coming weeks.

Katic, in the meantime, is likely to be benched until Worrall stars to show more frailties. He has the backing of Goldson so far, and will have his opportunities to impress going forward.
