Fresh off a terrific individual performance against Spartak Moscow, Connor Goldson’s focused has swiftly switched to Aberdeen in the Betfred Cup.

Rangers found themselves held to a 0-0 draw by the Russian side last night. It was a point, however, that keeps their status at the top of the group intact. The Gers also became history-makers by going 11 matches unbeaten in Europe. This overtook Walter Smith’s Champions League side of 1992/93, who secured 10 matches unbeaten.

All in all, it remained a successful night for Steven Gerrard’s side at Ibrox last night. The draw brought plenty of positive factors to the club, and everyone was satisfied with the display.

Goldson was one of them, but he’s already put it to the back of his mind. For the Englishmen, all he’s focused on now is the clash against Aberdeen on Sunday in the Betfred Cup.

Speaking to the official Rangers website after the match, the centre-back made his thoughts clear on Sunday’s importance.

“I can’t wait for Sunday, it will be a great occasion and we all want to get to a cup final. We know how big it is for ourselves and the whole club and the supporters so we are going to give everything to get there.

“Everyone who has been brought in here knows the aim overall is to win as much as we can. We know we have to get something at some stage to give us the platform to go on and be successful.

“This is our first chance; this is our first semi-final so we are going to give everything to get to the final.”

Huge occasion

The occasion clearly isn’t lost on Goldson, who knows how big Sunday is for the supporters. Losing to the Dons this weekend would be unthinkable from Rangers fans’ perspective.

In recent years, the Betfred Cup has began to take on a little more meaning for the sides competing. Since its revamp a couple of years ago, the big teams in Scotland have been trying their hardest to win it.

This is a big change from when the League Cup saw weakened sides by Rangers and even Celtic. The competition is a symbol of so much this season, and would represent real progress for Rangers.

Goldson continues to be a star performer this term for Rangers, and once again failed to put a foot wrong against Spartak. He’s one of the standouts on a weekly basis, and you can bank on him performing against Aberdeen.

It’s vital, however, that his 10 other team-mates join him in performing on a big day at Hampden Park.
