Connor Goldson deserves praise for his individual display yesterday

Connor Goldson’s performance against Aberdeen will go under the radar, but he deserves huge credit for it.

The Rangers defender has been a standout this season under Steven Gerrard. Signed from Brighton in the summer, he’s been Rangers’ Mr Consistent throughout the campaign so far.

The 1-0 defeat to Aberdeen in yesterday’s Betfred Cup semi-final was a body blow, with barely anyone getting pass marks. Goldson, however, has to be the exception after a dominant display.

We spoke yesterday about the threat that James Wilson was going to provide. The on-loan Manchester United man has been a good performer for Aberdeen, and had the pace to trouble Rangers.

Goldson, however, was having none of it.

Every ball that came his way he fired it away to a teammate, be it with his head or his feet. He kept Wilson quiet all game and dealt with nearly every cross to perfection.

A growing confidence

There’s a growing confidence in Rangers’ star-signing these days. Against the Dons, Goldson also went on a couple of jinking runs that ended in free-kick opportunities for the Gers. They were never taken, but it was terrific work by the centre-back and shows where he is right now as a player.

Goldson now has real competition at the back in the form of Nikola Katic and Gareth McAuley. Gerrard, however, hasn’t dropped the Englishman yet. Goldson continues to be the one constant in the Rangers side each weak outside of Allan McGregor.

In what was a real day to forget for Rangers, Goldson reminded everyone of why he was brought to the club. He’s cementing himself as Rangers’ best defender for years, and is an incredible talent.

His display will be overshadowed by the occasion and the result. Rangers were absolutely shocking going forward against Aberdeen, but many will agree they had control on the game. This was mainly down to how dominant Goldson was at the back. He gobbled up everything that came his way with absolute ease, and is becoming such an influential figure at Ibrox.

It wasn’t the result anyone wanted, but Goldson can be delighted with his own display.
