Kris Commons has claimed that Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes will be regretting his decision to turn down Rangers, as quoted by the Scottish Sun (via the Daily Mail).

The former Gers midfielder opted to sign a new contract at Pittodrie back in 2017, rather than taking up the Ibrox hot seat [Telegraph], and his side now appears to be going backwards.

They were hammered 4-0 at home by Celtic on Sunday, with all four goals coming in the first half, having been thrashed 5-0 at Ibrox just a matter of weeks previously.

Is Aberdeen boss regretting call to turn down Rangers?

“That’s a real eye-opener, the kind of result which makes a manager think: ‘What am I actually doing here? Have I taken this as far as I can?’, said Commons, as quoted by the Scottish Sun (via the Daily Mail). “They were so unbelievably passive as Celtic blew them away during that opening 45-minute onslaught.”

“It was a complete humiliation and McInnes is experienced enough to know that the buck ultimately stops with him as manager.

“Fair play to him for showing some loyalty, but there must be a part of him which regrets snubbing the managerial vacancies at Rangers and Sunderland a few years back.”

Verdict

It’s not often Commons makes an assessment Rangers fans can agree with, but Aberdeen were indeed toothless against the Hoops on a day when they had a chance to impress.

Rather than going out and trying to get at Neil Lennon’s side, they sat back and let the opposition play, allowing themselves to be picked off at will.

Back in 2017, McInnes made a massive career decision to turn down the Rangers job, prioritising loyalty over ambition.

Since then, he’s pulled off notable victories against the Gers, including in the League Cup semi-final last season. However, his current team looks devoid of fight and any real quality and he must be questioning his call to stay on.

From a Bear’s perspective, it continues to look like the best possible outcome. While Aberdeen are struggling to impress, the Gers have the much more high-profile Steven Gerrard at the helm, who has attracted top players to the club and has revolutionised the playing style, yielding much-improved results.
