Wes Foderingham had the Rangers gloves for close to three years. Yet, he was resigned to the bench when Allan McGregor rejoined the club.

Rangers Goalkeeping Coach Colin Stewart sympathises with the goalkeeper.

Stewart described Allan McGregor’s arrival at the club as a “big blow” for Foderingham in a recent Six Yard Box podcast.

Stewart said: “Wes has been excellent. Over the summer it was a big blow for him with Allan coming in and being given the No.1 jersey.

“Over pre-season and the start to the season Wes has worked incredibly hard to keep himself fit and I’m sure the two performances he has had with the first team so far he has shown he is ready to come in when called upon.

“He is an extremely dedicated lad to his position. It’s never nice when another goalkeeper comes in to take that slot but credit to him.

“Handling not playing is massive and the only thing you can do is step back, do the basics and work hard.”

Wes Foderingham not done at Rangers yet

Whilst it might’ve been harsh on Foderingham given how he’d served the club, there were times when he didn’t perform to the level expected.

Too often he was beaten from range. Too often there were questions over his distribution. There wasn’t the same kind of consistency you get from Allan McGregor.

But with the appearances he has made, like Stewart said, he has shown he can deputise when called upon. Foderingham is also likely to get the nod in the Scottish Cup, so he’ll have his chance.

With McGregor 36 and Foderingham only 27, there’s also still plenty of time for Wes to make the gloves at Ibrox his own.

And he certainly seems committed to achieving just that.
