Former Rangers winger Chris Burke has responded to claims that his Twitter post in the wake of Sunday’s Kilmarnock defeat was intended to goad supporters.
The Kilmarnock winger, who scored in their 2-1 defeat of Rangers on Sunday, took to Twitter to celebrate his team’s victory. He shared an image of himself celebrating, with the caption “thanks for coming”.
The image, of Burke in front of Rangers fans, spawned a controversy-ridden article. But Burke has been quick to claim that goading Gers fans was never his intention.
It’s clear from here that Burke never wanted to rile Gers fans up. The 35-year-old winger has claimed the phrase and post has “no reference” to Rangers or their fans. The winger gave Borna Barisic a torrid time and given Killie’s European achievement, was entitled to celebrate.
The article, which has since been removed, was clearly playing on the idea another ex-Ger was laying the boot into the club.
There have been numerous complaints from fans about ex-players who are now pundits and commentators disrespecting the club.
Chris Burke is a Rangers Academy graduate and spent seven years at Ibrox between 2002 and 2009. He played over 130 times for the club, and it’d be strange if he wanted to damage that legacy.
The winger of course now plies his trade for Kilmarnock but has played for Cardiff City, Birmingham City, Nottingham Forest, Rotherham United and Ross County in a sterling career.
