An old rival of Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is the latest name to be tipped for the Celtic manager’s job – despite Neil Lennon still being in place as boss.
Rangers’ relentless form this season has turned the screw on the Parkhead gaffer and Lennon’s future remains up in the air going into the rest of this season and the next.
There’s been plenty of names linked with the vacant manager’s post – not least ex-Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez – but the latest is bound to surprise a few bluenoses.
Ex-Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard is known to be fond of the Gers but given old adversary Stevie G is in charge at Rangers, it’s got some thinking he might be perfectly suited to Celtic.
The likes of Harry Redknapp have claimed the Parkhead manager’s job might be the perfect fit for Lamps – who is coincidentally Redknapp’s nephew – after he was sacked by Chelsea this week.
Lampard, 42, has been sacked with Chelsea languishing in 9th in the Premier League following a summer of heavy spending with ex-PSG boss Thomas Tuchel expected to replace him [BBC Sport].
“That’s certainly something that would interest any manager. It’s a great football club to come and manage, that’s for sure,” said Redknapp [Daily Record].
“Neil Lennon is still there so I wouldn’t want to talk too much about someone else taking his job but obviously it would be interesting to see Frank in direct opposition to Steven Gerrard.
“I don’t know whether, if the Celtic job came up, it would be something that would interest Frank. Obviously Neil Lennon is still in charge and I wouldn’t want to see him lose his job.
“Would Frank want to jump straight back in if it did become available? I wouldn’t know.
“But you could certainly see the appeal.”
The prospect of Rangers boss Steven Gerrard facing off against old Chelsea foe Frank Lampard at Celtic might be a tantalising one for the neutral but Lampard might not be impressed.
The ex-England midfielder has previously been on the record as saying “I’m a Rangers fan” [Daily Record] and even attended the 2008 UEFA Cup Final in Manchester.
